“It’s been a minute since I’ve had to sit with a grieving family immediately after losing their child,” Tara said once they left the Morgans’ house late Sunday morning. Royce had sent the rest of the team home to rest as they waited for Bryan Morgan to arrive back in Savannah. “That was brutal.”

“It was,” Royce agreed. He’d never get used to that part of the job, and he wouldn’t lie to Tara and tell her it got better. It fucking didn’t.

The Morgans were as different as night and day. Bryan was tall and muscular to Samantha’s petite and dainty. He was swarthy and dark to her peaches and cream. He seemed to dwarf her as they sat together on a loveseat. The only similarities were the matching expressions of shock and misery evident in their facial expressions and body language. Red, swollen eyes had stared at Royce and Tara, silently pleading with them to do or say something that would wake them up from their nightmare.

Tara heaved a deep sigh, and Royce glanced over at the passenger seat. It felt strange to be working a case with someone other than Sawyer. Royce sometimes partnered with the marshals’ fugitive task force without Sawyer, but it was rare to find one of them without the other. Three years wasn’t a long time in the grand scheme of things, but Sawyer Key had burrowed himself so profoundly into Royce’s soul that he was confident his boyfriend had permanently altered his genetic makeup. Sawyer had wrapped himself around Royce’s DNA strands as easily as he had his heart. Royce had blond hair, gray eyes, and now came complete with a six-foot Adonis who loved him more than life itself. And Royce was more than okay with his altered genetics. Sawyer made him a better man.

But Tara looked anything but fine, so Royce said the first thing he could think of to distract her. “Was it as brutal as me having to watch you seduce my best friend with smoldering glances?”

Tara snorted. “Smoldering glances.”

“Going to put that on your dating site bio?” Royce teased. He could tell Tara was staring at him, but he didn’t meet her gaze until he stopped at a red light. “What?”

Tara’s right brow arched, and her mouth quirked into a smirk. “You think I’m some player, huh?”

Royce offered an easy smile before returning his attention to the traffic light. “No, I don’t, but you have a lady-killer reputation. I think still waters run deep, and there’s a lot I don’t know about you.”

Tara chuckled. “It really kept our unit on their toes, yeah? They were hiding their wives from both of us.”

Royce laughed too. “Have you met Ashcroft’s wife yet?”

“Nope,” Tara replied. “You?”

“Yeah. He introduced us once I came out,” Royce said.

The memory of kissing Sawyer in front of their unit at Joe’s still heated his blood and made him smile. They’d been there to celebrate Royce’s promotion to sergeant, and he hadn’t liked the way Diego Fuentes, who’d been a patrolman at the time, kept flirting with his man.
